You have just gotten your new tattoo… but wait a minute the process is not yet complete. It will still be a few days before you can show off your new tattoo to the world. There are certain steps that you must take to make sure that your tattoo heals correctly.

In most cases, your tattoo artist will have an information sheet with a listing of aftercare instructions for taking care of tattoos. Be sure to listen closely to this advice and read all instructions carefully. If your artist doesn’t offer this information…be certain to ask.

Although tattoo artists differ in their recommendation, here are some general guidelines for taking care of tattoos:

Never shower immediately after getting a new tattoo. You should keep it dry for the first few days.

Always wash your hands before cleaning or moisturizing your new tattoo. There is always the possibility of infecting the tattoo, and surrounding area, until it has completely healed.

Your new tattoo should be cleaned at least twice a day. Your tattoo artist will tell you how long to maintain this care. If not, be sure to ask.

Apply antibacterial ointment regularly do not rub too hard or you could damage the soft tissue. Be careful not to itch or scratch the skin or scab on or around your new tattoo. Doing so could damage the tattoo design.

By taking care of tattoos in these early stages, you will ensure that your tattoo heals properly and remains infection free. Following the above advice will guarantee a long and healthy life for your new tattoo.
